Dining Out Tips for Dieters

Most people like to eat out once in a while, and many go to restaurants on a regular basis. Dining out can be difficult when a person is trying to lose weight or just wants to eat healthy foods.

The following tips can help make dining in restaurants an enjoyable and healthy experience:

  • Before going to the restaurant, drink one or two glasses of water or eat a piece of fruit to curb the appetite.
  • Have a salad before the main course. Ask for the salad dressing “on the side” and use it sparingly. Ask for a wedge of lemon or some seasoned rice vinegar instead of an oil-based dressing.
  • Avoid drinking wine or other alcoholic beverages before the meal. Alcohol stimulates the appetite and can also reduce a person’s willpower.
  • When selecting a meal, avoid fried foods and try to choose dishes that don’t include sauces, gravies or butter. Don’t be afraid to ask for your foods to be prepared without high-fat ingredients or sauces.
  • Skip dessert if possible, or choose fruit, sherbet or plain vanilla ice cream.

Dining out can be a very pleasant way to pass the time with friends or family, and with a little effort can be easily integrated into an overall weight-loss program. Dining companions can help by respecting your diet and not pressuring you into ordering rich dishes and desserts.
