Tessalon is a non-narcotic antitussive agent. It works by acting on the brain to suppress the cough reflex.

Used to relieve a cough.
Swallow capsule whole, should not be chewed. Chewing capsule may temporarily numb mouth and throat, causing choking or severe allergic reaction.
- Usual adult dose: one 100-milligram perle taken 3 times per day, as needed, up to 600 milligrams or 6 perles per day.
- Usual child dose: for children over 10 — same as adults.
- Missed dose: take as soon as possible, unless almost time for next dose. In that case, do not take missed dose; go back to regular schedule. Do not double doses.
Tessalon Side Effects
mouth and throat numbness if capsules are chewed or dissolved; restlessness; tremors; convulsions. If you suspect an overdose, immediately seek medical attention.
Side effects: allergic reactions, burning sensation in the eyes, constipation, dizziness, extreme calm, headache, itching, mental confusion, nausea, numbness in chest, skin eruptions, stuffy nose, upset stomach, vague “chilly” feeling, visual hallucinations.
No known less common or rare Tessalon side effects.
Inform your doctor before combining Tessalon with other prescription medications.
On rare occasions bizarre behavior, confusion, and visual hallucinations have occurred.
No known food/other substance interactions.
If pregnant or planning to become pregnant, inform your doctor immediately. Not known if Tessalon appears in breast milk.
No special precautions apply to seniors.
Not generally prescribed for children under 10 years. Follow doctor’s instructions carefully for children ages 10 and older.
